Clearing The Fibro Fog With SAM-e
I have a confession to make. One of my life goals is to find a magic genie. Seriously.
Anytime I’m in an antique shop and I come across an old bottle or oil lamp, I pick it up, glance around to make sure no one is watching and then rub it – just in case there’s a genie inside. So far I’ve yet to strike gold, but when I do, I’ve got my three wishes all lined up. I won’t tell you my first two wishes, as they’re selfish and materialistic – and I don’t want you to judge me. My third wish, however, would be to be freed of my Fibromyalgia. I’m not sure if genies can do that, but I’ll be darned if I’m not going ask.
Some day I’ll find that elusive genie, but until then the granting of my wishes depends almost entirely on me. I’ve researched a variety of natural ingredients that can help alleviate a few symptoms but have yet to find that “magical” ingredient that can alleviate them all. I have, however, found a few that come close – one of which is the ingredient SAM-e. Let me explain.
SAM-e is a naturally occurring chemical found in the body, but it can also be produced for consumption in supplement form – which it has been in the U.S. since 1999. Studies have shown it to be effective in treating a variety of fibromyalgia symptoms. In fact, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center “SAMe can be effective in reducing symptoms of fibromyalgia – including pain, fatigue, morning stiffness, and depressed mood.” Lets take a closer look:
Pain & Stiffness:
According to a report by the University of Maryland Medical Center, “In several short term studies (ranging 4 – 12 weeks), SAMe supplements were as effective as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen in adults with knee, hip, or spine osteoarthritis. SAMe was as effectives as these medications in lessening morning stiffness, decreasing pain, reducing swelling, improving range of motion, and increasing walking pace.”
Additionally, clinical studies suggest that SAM-e not only reduces pain and stiffness but does so with fewer side effects than traditional anti-inflammatory drugs.
Depression & Mood
According to a report by the Harvard Medical School, “One of the best-studied of these supplements is S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM-e), a naturally occurring molecule present in all living cells and a major methyl group donor in the human body. Controlled trials have found SAM-e to be more efficacious than placebo and equal in efficacy to the tricyclic antidepressants for treating major depressive disorder (MDD).”
Several studies support this assessment and show SAM-e to be just as effective as some prescription medications for depression but without the side effects.
Chronic Fatigue & Fibro Fog
Though more research is needed, scientists believe that SAM-e can help address the symptoms of chronic fatigue as well as improve cognitive difficulties through its promotion of serotonin and dopamine production. Levels of these two neurotransmitters are often low in people suffering from fibromyalgia.
Although I’ve yet to find my “magic genie” or my “magic ingredient” to rid me of my fibromyalgia, there are certainly some magical ingredients out there with a lot of potential to provide relief for myself and millions of others. What “magic” remedies have helped relieve some of your symptoms?
