Women Who Suffer With Fibromyalgia
Women carry much on their shoulders they are nurturers, thinkers, strategizes, cooks and even financial providers so when you add a condition as frustrating and overwhelming as fibromyalgia to their long list it might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Fibromyalgia is a painful chronic condition that affects hundreds of thousands of women all around the world causing further stresses to a woman’s already stressful life. Fibromyalgia is a condition that stirs up pain in the soft tissues that surrounds the muscles in the body. There are eighteen places on the body where soft tissues exists thus creating a series of painful moments that only worsen when life evolves to include things such as exercise and pregnancy.
It is no secret that a pregnant woman goes through a lot while she is in the process of carrying her child, the body changes and her hormones are out of whack, but there are those women that sadly begin to experience all over body pain known as fibromyalgia that makes moving very difficult.
Though an expectant mother might be excited about her baby, there are still a few fears and worries that she possess and that worry can turn into stress as the time of the baby’s arrival draws near. Stress can lead to an outbreak of fibromyalgia pains, the first three months of a woman’s pregnancy is her highest risk of developing this painful condition and the emotional and physiological changes that come with her new diagnosis.
Treating Fibromyalgia While Pregnant
Treating fibromyalgia during pregnancy must be done carefully, under a doctor’s supervision and so not to upset or stress the expectant mother out further. Medications are not to be used during pregnancy so some other form of treatment must be had. Some physicians recommend a more natural and holistic approach to fibromyalgia treatment during pregnancy. Holistic or natural treatment would include options such as massage therapy; this is a very relaxing option that will not only help relieve pain but stress as well. Exercise, yoga and meditation are also safe options for pregnant women.
While fibromyalgia is more prevalent in women, it can still be seen in men. Sometimes it can be triggered by a trauma such as a car accident or emotional stress. It also can be triggered by certain viral infections. However, it can happen just the same as it does with most women: with absolutely no warning.
Fibromyalgia And The Differences Between Men And Women
Fibromyalgia precursors are found in both genetics and hormones. Certain genes make people more susceptible to pain. Some even say that it is hereditary. And on top of that, women are more susceptible to pain because estrogen brings down the pain threshold. It is thought the reduction in the pain threshold may be why women are more likely to have fibromyalgia symptoms than men.
It is also thought that men may be more likely to not respond to the tender points test. This is where a doctor applies pressure to 18 different tender points. Eleven of these 18 tender points need to be reacted to for a positive diagnosis. Since women are tenderer and more likely to tell a doctor about pain, men may not react to enough if any tender points.
Another theory is that men are too proud to admit that they are in pain. Because men are more likely to be the primary earner in the family, they may fear that if they are diagnosed with fibromyalgia they cannot function as usual.
Many jobs, like construction, are more difficult for men with fibromyalgia. Construction requires long days and heavy lifting. With the fatigue that comes from fibromyalgia after a less active day, the active life a construction worker would be utterly exhausting. Fibromyalgia sufferers have chronic pain, that’s without having to lift heavy objects and basically working out all day long.
While men experience the symptoms of fibromyalgia, they typically are less intense. They may also experience less of them.
However, the biggest complaint men have is less biological and more sociological. It’s embarrassing to admit that they are in pain and tired all the time. Overall, the most helpful thing for men with fibromyalgia is to stay active and not become overweight.
